Dessert Specialties: Think Outside The Cone With These Treats

There’s no wrong way to eat ice cream. It’s easy to get stuck in an ice cream rut, though, and just get a traditional, cone or cup of a reliable flavor because you’re uncertain about other choices.

Ice cream is a small pleasure in life — especially during the summer! — and it’s meant to be savored. But this sweet treat is anything but simple. From complex flavors, to topping combos, sauces, and entirely different shapes, the ways to enjoy ice cream are limitless.

If you’re feeling like ice cream has been tasting a little too vanilla, check out these alternatives to traditional cones.

PIES / CAKES

Pie and cake are already decadent treats for the discerning dessert lover. Upgrading to an ice cream cake or an ice cream pie is a pro move.

Ice Cream Swirl Pies: Whether you choose to create your own ice cream pie or pick one of our own concoctions (like thin mint cookie, Reese’s peanut butter bomb, or birthday cake surprise), an ice cream pie is a great choice to think outside the cone. The combinations are endless, which means you’ll never have a boring ice cream pie!

Ice Cream Cookie Cakes: This delicious treat isn’t just for birthdays, though enjoying one will feel like a party! Ice cream cakes can be made with soft serve or hand-dipped ice cream. You can build your own ice cream cake at Urban Swirl — from a base of sugar cookie, brownie, or chocolate chip cookie to the type of ice cream and the toppings on the cake!

MILKSHAKES / MALTS

Milkshakes and malts are a timeless piece of Americana cuisine.

At Urban Swirl, you can get more than just a classic chocolate or vanilla milkshake or malt. You can enjoy a shake in any of the 18 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream from Graeter’s.

You can always create your own shake, too. If you’re feeling indecisive but want to spice things up, Urban Swirl even has six specialty shakes to try — Strawberry Shortcake, Thin Mint Cookie, Peanut Butter Cup, Unicorn Magic, Cookie Monster, and Toffee Coffee.

SUNDAES

Sundaes are the classic, cone-less ice cream treat. Though the sundae’s history is a mystery, it’s no mystery that they’re a popular treat.

You can always get a classic sundae with your sauce of choice (strawberry, cherry, hot fudge, oh my!). But with 21 different soft-serve flavors, more than 18 hand-dipped flavors, and more than 60 different toppings, sundaes are the perfect way to explore the flavorful world of ice cream. Just don’t forget the cherry on top.

At Urban Swirl, we’ve even gotten fancy and created a few specialty sundaes.

Granger’s Graeter: We put a warm brownie on top of black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream, cover it in hot fudge and caramel sauces, and top it with homemade whip cream, pecans, and a cherry.

Peanut Butter Pileup: We start with one scoop of double chocolate chip ice cream and one scoop of Bucket Blitz. Then we top it with peanut butter sauce, crushed Reese’s mini peanut butter cups, whip cream, and a cherry.

South Bend River Turtle: We use one scoop each of salted caramel and butter pecan ice cream and cover it with mini turtles and pecans. We smother that with hot fudge and caramel and top it with homemade whip cream and a cherry.
